SELECTING BAG STYLES

SEOM SV PBOM OMPE PV DFOM

There are no hard and fast rules as to which bag style can or should be used for most commodities. However, the following is a list of common practices, preferences, and considerations.

Sewn End Open Mouth (SEOM)

- oldest method of open mouth bagging.

Good choice when:

  • low cost bag is needed
  • product is free flowing
  • product does not require high barrier level

Disadvantages

palletises only moderately well due to length-width ratio and sewing tape ears

requires sewing equipment for closure with attendant closure material needs and equipment maintenance requirements

Sewn Valve (SV)

  • used only because of available converting equipment and low capital cost. PV is superior in all other respects

Pinch Bottom Open Mouth (PBOM)

- best protective bag

  • can be made airtight with heat sealed closures
  • provides best sift resistance of any bag
  • proceeds best and highest level of barrier protection
  • does not require closure material since pre-applied hot melt eliminates this need
  • requires precision closing operations

Open Mouth Pasted End (OMPE)

A pasted bottom open mouth sack manufactured with stepped walls at the top. After the sack is filled, these walls are folded to form a multi-ply, sift resistant closure by applying a suitable adhesive or by reactivating factory applied adhesive.

Pasted Valve (PV)

  • good for products that are powdered to granular, free flowing, and do not require a high level of barrier protection against water vapor, gases, odours, or greases
  • provides best palletised loads on the smallest pallet size
  • high bagging rates attainable
  • no filled bag closing materials or equipment required
  • entire system including palletising can be highly automated
  • sifting can be a problem in the corners or out of the valve

Double Fold Open Mouth (DFOM)

The bottom of this sack is folded over twice and then adhered to the sack wall. The top of the sack can be manufactured for stepped end pasted open mouth or sewn open mouth closure.
